How HB Landscaping Installs Permeable Driveways: Our Step-by-Step Process

Thinking about a permeable driveway but not sure what the process actually looks like? You're not alone. One of the most common questions we get at HB Landscaping is: "What happens between the day I call you and the day my new driveway is done?"

We believe transparency builds trust — so in this post, we're walking you through exactly how we handle a permeable driveway installation from start to finish. No surprises. No runaround. Just a clear picture of what to expect when you work with us.

Why Choose HB Landscaping for Your Permeable Driveway?

HB Landscaping has been serving Fergus, Elora, Centre Wellington, and surrounding communities throughout Wellington County for years. Permeable interlocking concrete pavers are one of our core hardscaping specialties — it's not a service we offer on the side. We understand the specific soil conditions, drainage patterns, and freeze-thaw cycles that affect driveways in our region, and we design every installation with long-term performance in mind.

We were voted Runner-Up for Best Landscaping Company in Centre Wellington, and we take that recognition seriously. Every project gets the same attention to detail, whether it's a small front driveway or a full property hardscape overhaul.

Our Permeable Driveway Installation Process

Step 1: Free Site Consultation & Assessment

It all starts with a conversation. We come to your property — at no cost and no obligation — to assess the site and understand your goals. During this visit, we look at:

  • Soil drainage capacity — We perform or review a percolation test to determine how quickly your soil absorbs water. This tells us what kind of sub-base design you'll need.

  • Existing drainage patterns — Where does water currently go during a heavy rain? Are there low spots, slopes, or areas of concern?

  • Current driveway condition — Do we need to remove existing asphalt or concrete? What's underneath it?

  • Your goals and style preferences — Are you focused on function, curb appeal, or both? We'll show you paver samples and discuss colour and pattern options.

After the site visit, we prepare a detailed, transparent quote — no vague estimates or hidden costs.

Step 2: Design & Material Selection

Once you're ready to proceed, we finalize the design together. For permeable driveways, this includes:

  • Selecting the right permeable interlocking concrete paver style and colour for your home

  • Designing the sub-base depth and structure based on your soil test results

  • Planning drainage management, including any edge restraints, catch basins, or overflow solutions if required

  • Confirming the layout, border treatment, and any accent details

We also discuss grant and rebate eligibility at this stage. If your project qualifies for programs like Hamilton's Rain Ready Rebate or a Kitchener-Waterloo stormwater credit, we'll make sure we document the installation in a way that supports your application.

Step 3: Site Preparation & Excavation

On installation day, our team begins by protecting your property — covering garden beds, laying down plywood on the lawn where equipment will travel, and preparing for material delivery. Then we excavate.

Permeable driveways require a deeper excavation than traditional pavement because of the engineered sub-base layers that allow water infiltration. Typically, this means removing 12 to 18 inches of material (more in some cases depending on soil conditions). The excavated material is hauled away, leaving a clean, level base ready for construction.

Step 4: Sub-Base Installation

This is the most critical part of a permeable driveway — and where the real difference between a quality installation and a shortcut becomes apparent. A proper permeable sub-base consists of multiple layers:

  • Geotextile fabric — Laid along the base and sides of the excavation to prevent soil from migrating upward into the stone layers while still allowing water to pass through.

  • Large aggregate reservoir layer — A deep layer of clean, open-graded crushed stone (typically 3/4" clear stone) that serves as an underground reservoir, temporarily holding water and allowing it to slowly infiltrate into the native soil below.

  • Intermediate stone layer — A smaller aggregate layer that bridges between the reservoir and the bedding layer above.

  • Bedding layer — A thin, carefully levelled layer of chip stone or concrete sand that provides the precise grade for the pavers to sit on.

Each layer is carefully compacted and checked for grade. This foundation is what makes the difference between a driveway that holds up for 25 years and one that sinks or shifts within a few seasons.

Step 5: Paver Installation

With the sub-base complete, we begin laying the permeable interlocking concrete pavers. Our crew works systematically across the driveway, following the approved pattern and maintaining consistent joint spacing. Key steps include:

  • Establishing reference lines to keep courses straight and aligned

  • Cutting pavers to fit edges and curves with precision saws

  • Installing edge restraints to keep the field of pavers from spreading over time

  • Filling joints with permeable jointing aggregate (not sand — sand would clog the gaps and defeat the purpose)

Step 6: Compaction & Final Inspection

Once all pavers are laid and joints are filled, the entire surface is plate-compacted to lock everything into place and ensure a firm, even surface. We do a final inspection of the entire driveway — checking for any pavers that need adjustment, verifying the surface drains correctly, and ensuring the finished grade works with your property's drainage.

Step 7: Site Cleanup & Walkthrough

We leave your property cleaner than we found it. All excavation material and construction debris are removed. We walk you through the finished driveway, explain how to care for it, and discuss any grant or rebate documentation you may need.

How Long Does It Take?

Most residential permeable driveway installations take 2–4 days from start to finish, depending on the size of the driveway and site conditions. Larger or more complex projects may take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeline estimate before we start, and we communicate clearly if anything changes.

What Should You Do to Prepare?

Very little! We handle everything. Before we arrive, it helps to:

  • Move vehicles out of the driveway and away from the work area

  • Let your neighbours know there will be construction equipment for a couple of days (professional courtesy goes a long way)

  • Identify any underground utilities — we recommend calling Ontario One Call (1-800-400-2255) in advance so utilities can be marked
